In 2010, our members helped raise national awareness about the poor safety conditions for workers on the Gulf shores cleaning up the BP oil spill. We launched the coalition BP Makes Me Sick, and our petition to make BP provide respirators for all workers received over 82,000 signatures from our members. Actions against BP:

  • PETITION — Over 82,000 people demanded BP provide respirators for Gulf cleanup crews, including coalition members Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Democracy for America, 15 members of Congress including Florida Representatives Alan Grayson and Kendrick Meek, and several Gulf fishing and environmental organizations.
  • CALLS — Our members made calls to the White House asking President Obama and OSHA to protect BP workers.
  • ADS — We launched BPMakesMeSick.com and our members raised over $12,000 to fund online ads.
  • NEWSNew York Times: “A liberal group’s online petition urging the Obama administration to take a firmer hand on protections for oil leak responders in the Gulf of Mexico has won the support of 11 House Democrats and 31 congressional candidates, as well as more than 31,000 others, since its launch early yesterday.”
