Last week, we reported on a new study released by UCLA that found that American schools are being quietly re-segregated, partly due to the rapid expansion of charter schools.
In Georgia, a coalition of for-profit education companies is pushing for a new ballot amendment that would let the state expand these segregation-friendly charter schools over the objection of local school boards.
Now, a coalition of civil rights groups in the state has come together to oppose the ballot amendment:
Black lawmakers, civil rights groups and several associations of educators have formed a coalition against a proposed constitutional amendment on charterAi??schools.
The amendment would allow a new state body to select private operators to run taxpayer financed schools. Backed by Gov. Nathan Deal, the measure is on the Nov. 6Ai??ballot.
The opposition coalition announced Tuesday includes associations of teachers, parents, superintendents and local school board members, along with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the NAACPAi??and other civil rightsAi??organizations.
This coalition of groups represent a significant challenge to the prevailing wisdom that the rapid expansion of poorly regulated and untested charter schools are essential to closing the racial education gap.
This coalition is what it will take to defeat the attacks on public education everywhere.
I am totally for segregated schools. Not along the lines of color, but rather socio economic lines. I have worked hard to live in a nice area, and to put my kids in a nice school. Now the city sees fit to redraw school lines, and to bring in kids with socio economically challeged parents, or in many cases parent. The problem with this exposure. I have kept my children away from a class of people who use rough language, have foul words on thier clothing, vulger images or sayings on their shirts, skin, cars, etc. As a general rule it is the parents coming to school events displaying this kind of behavior, but unfortunately those values, or lack there of are passed into their children. These children then bring the lack of work ethic, or expectations of a free ride, or foul language to the school. Now there are a few exceptions to my generalizations, but they are just that, exceptions.
Charter schools should NOT receive funding from public schools!!! If parents want their kids in charter schools then let them pay for it!! Charter schools DON’T provide ae better education in the long-run!! Better schools begin with parents in ALL SCHOOLS being involved and ensuring their children aren’t causing problems at school!! If people treated all people as humans and equals this world would be a hell of lot better!! Teachers most often aren’t the problem and NEITHER ARE TEACHER”S UNIONS!! Mitt Romney showed his “ass” at Education Nation yesterday in New York!! He is obviously anti-teachers, anti-unions and anti-students!!!
