Last year, the Republican Governor of Georgia, Nathan Deal — aided and abetted by his party in the state legislature and a faction of appeasing Democrats –Ai??enacted huge cuts to the HelpingAi??OutstandingAi??Pupils Educationally (HOPE) scholarship. These cuts ended HOPE’s status as a full tuition program for most students; the worst brunt of the cuts fell on minority students.
This weekend, Deal attended a football game at the University of Georgia. As he sat in an elite skybox surrounded by 100,000 football fans, many of them students, a plane flew overhead carrying a banner that read: “GovernorAi??DealAi??broke HOPE, txt fixit to 30644.” Watch local news station 11 Alive’s report about the flyover:
“This is paid for by a leftist organization that believes there’s no end to other people’sAi??money,” Brian Robinson said of the banner.
Deal sure knows a lot about other people’s money — specifically, giving more of it to the rich at the expense of the rest of us. Last year, he proposed a tax plan that would’ve granted tax cuts for the richest Georgians while actually increasing taxes on working-class Georgians. Thankfully, his plan was defeated. Hopefully the good people of Georgia will force him to renege on his unfair cuts to HOPE as well.
Just another racist, bigoted republican gotvernor. His policies obviously hurts children, the elderly, the disadvantaged, the ill and of course the entire middle class. He is simply just another flunky of the super-rich. Like all republicans he and his ilk he can’t stand that President Obama won the election legally unlike the “alleged” president “W.” He is also a shining example of the “white supremisist” attitude of many “alleged” republican leaders. The republicans want to enslave ALL AMERICANS to Wall St. and the Koch brothers. The republicans have “NO” answers but, to blame President Obama and attack all Americans except the super-rich.
OK, so the GOP BS line is: “We will help those that are WORTHY, not those who NEED.” Who decides ‘worth’, and how? By what standard?
A Party that claims “pro-life” advocacy pretty much cuts people loose within the first year — “Yes, you have a right to life, but the quality of that life is up to you, infant.” What a person does with their life, based on the gifts and advantages (if any) they acquire along the way, is their scale for determining ‘worth’. So, a youth who is gifted, but grows up in a school district of marginal performance, is automatically disqualified because he/she will not have the tools to show skills, gifts, and ‘worth’.
Makes sense to me…or it WOULD, were I a white supremacist.
Harry Barr is right: the wealthy elite (be they Republicans or Democrats, banksters or CEOs, the 2%) want to enslave us by denying us our human rights. Education is one of those rights because it is a need we have in order to survive in society. And yes, it wears the face of white male supremacy because a portion of oppressed poor whites will go along with that image.
Let us tackle some ethical nitty-gritty here. Even before civilizations arose, pecking orders among animal societies had been established, usually on the basis of individual strengths. With the human invention of the concept of “slavery,” civilizations developed where one group subjugated and exploited the labor of another group or groups. Social stratification continues to be maintained to this day through the inequitable distribution of resources and opportunities in defiance of any ideal of “all men are created equal.” However, all men and women are created equal, equal in VALUE, because human = human. The VALUE of each human is equal to the VALUE of each other human, whatever differences, vast or slight, may exist among them. Is the physician of greater value because in his role and with his skill he can heal a patient when that patient can repair the doctor’s plumbing when that is broken? Their skills and roles are merely different but just as essential in our society. Is an athletic, aggressive girl better than a shy, intellectual one? Their behaviors differ but both have equal potential to become competent professionals and/or excellent mothers. One’s VALUE by being human is not determined by possessions or skills or behaviors or roles or characteristics or any other criterion since any human cannot be more or less than human.
Therefore, as humans we need education, good health, community, safety, autonomy, et al to actualize our potential, we have rights to these that other humans do not have the right to deny us.
