Unemployment benefits for two million Americans are set to expire this year. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) refuses to allow a vote on the extension because he wants to see the benefits coupled with the extension of tax cuts for the rich as well as certain spending cuts.
Last month, the Democratic staff of the House Ways and Means Committee Ai??released a report looking at how many Americans would lose their benefits if they unemployment insurance was not extended. According to their research, as many as 24,000 Kentuckians will lose their benefits this week because of McConnell’s obstruction.
The state’s unemployment rate remains a very high 8.2 percent, and there simply aren’t enough jobs for everyone who is unemployed.
So why don’t some of these people move to where jobs are available or get some job training to give them marketable job skills? Why should the American people continue to pay someone not to work for more than a year?
Maybe, just maybe, because America buys too much Chinese junk and employs too many Indians to work customer service phones. Want 24,000 Kentuckians to relocate there?
Jimmy doom is right. the conservative corporations have moved their headquarters off shore where taxes are lower, manufacturing where labor costs less. Why don’t they move their residence ther too, while they’re at it. And perhaps the low paid labor there, will have enough money to buy their products. Why should CEO’s and stock holders make millions while the working class is supposed to exist on little or nothing. The ratio of income had contiued to go up for the Rich, whiale going down for everyone else. How can they explain that?
Americans via their employers pay into unemployment insurance so that it’s there when they are out of work….There are about 4 unemployed people for every job opening. People would have to move out of the country for this plan to work.
So, you’re wanting people to move to another State for a job when they have no money to live on in the State they are currently in. Correct?
You don’t get the big picture Mike. The reason the jobs aren’t there is that they have been systematically taken away to other countries in the name of profits. Kentucky is one of the least educated in the country (47) and also one of the poorest (40). When you remove the jobs that most if not all can do and ship them away, you create a vacuum. This vacuum was never filled, it was magnified by the nation’s economic problems.
I have 2 questions for you Mike;
1. Where are they supposed to move “where jobs are available”? I don’t know where the job market is high for high school educated employees at the moment.
2. How are they supposed to afford to move there? Unemployment benefits are not enough to cover a move when you’re already making less than you did while working.
Here’s why you should pay for them not to work for a year, because it could be you and your family who loses their income next. These aren’t bad people, or lazy people. The people I know that have suffered through this economy over the past 4 years are the same as you or I. You’d do well to have perspective and put yourself in that position, oh and don’t do the whole “I’m better than that, that’ll never happen to me” crap either. It can happen to anyone who isn’t independently wealthy, and even some of them too. Attitudes of “why should I help” are piss poor and not what America is or ever has been about.
Because the cost of moving, the cost of job training, and living expenses while looking for work is so easy to come up with when unemployed?
I pray one day you have to leave off of unemployment and then you can understand how hard it is. No one can just move, and a lot of them have job training, not to mention college degrees. But you are so judgmental and have no common sense or class that you have no idea what it’s like to feel something for your fellow man who is having a hard time. I do hope one day you have to go through it, I really do. Then your ignorant ass will understand.
*live*
It is my sincere hope that the law of Karma will be coming back to you shortly and that you will learn the answer to your question by EXPERIENCE!!
(1) I have a Bachelor’s degree in Business with a concentration in Operations Management and over 15 years experience in production management and I can’t find a job anywhere in the lower 48 states. And, before you say it, I will take anything.
(2) Have you ever tried to just up and move with no money? Kind of takes some income to “move to where the jobs are.” That’s a typical right-wing response.
Be thankful you have a job, because when you lose it, you’ll be in the same boat as people like me.
Northern New Jersey has openings for those with your type of degrees. You are absolutely right; it’s not easy to move though.
Would you want to sell the home handed down to your family for years and move to a strange place and try to start all over again? Duh? Taxes for unemployment insurance are taken out of our paychecks for this. What the hell is wrong with you ME ME’s.? I am sure you will probably need it too if we go off the cliff and loose your job. Yall will be some of the 1st to go down to the Unemployment office to get yours!
Please educate yourself. We pay into Unemployment Insurance for just these times. And last I checked we were just coming out of a recession. Assuming that people are lazy or can just run out and afford new training when they have to feed their family first is presumptive. Also, this money is stimulative to the economy. These are people who buy soap and diapers.
Does Mitch realize all these people own guns? And not all of them are… mentally balanced?
I don’t think many of will mind…….they are proud republicans that will agree to and vote against their own interests whenever they can. You can’t help the stupid……it they want to continue to being stupid.
Hey this country needs more poor proud republicans!!!! They may not have money to live………………but two homos can’t get married in their state. That is so much more important to them. Oh maybe they can pray to God to pay the rent!!!!!!!!
And don’t forget a homophobic like you has freedom of speech to show how ignorant you really are.
Missed the point Tina. Producer James is being ironic.
James is being ironic, the real irony is so many think they can pray away the gay. Well the works as well as praying that God pays your rent!
My concern is for the general welfare of the people, without these modest funds we will have more people under fed, which breeds illness and disease. Add that to a population of people who are without funds to stay warm or in shelter-homes, apartments- now you have the perfect conditions for lack of proper sanitation and soon you have an outbreak of infectious disease. Talk about cutting your nose off despite your face! It will not matter if you are of either political party if you become ill along with thousands of others.
