On Wednesday, we reported that Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA) said on MSNBC that Republicans should be willing to shut down the government to get Democrats to agree to radical cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits.
Today, BondBuyer’s Jen DePaul reports that Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) made a similar threat:
We can only imagine what Cornyn means by “the long-term fiscal health of our country,” but it seems he is willing to go to incredible lengths to secure his right-wing ideological vision.
Democrats should not fear staring down Republicans over a government shutdown. Recall that in the 1990’s, Speaker Newt Gingrich’s (R-GA) shut down of the government resulted in a dive in the polls.
Maybe if the Republicans had to face living on only SSA benefits and Medicare, they wouldn’t be so hasty to demand cuts. Oh wait, they don’t pay into SSA or Medicare, do they????? Scum bags. And that’s meant for all politicians, by the way, regardless of party. Anyone who is willing to hang their constituents out to dry should be faced with the same! Try to live on what most of us do…things would change!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell them to give up their benefits like retireing with full pay for life, their own health coverage, 60 plus days off, etc.
Tell the House and Senate to give up their perks!
If these Republicans are to cheap to pay more in income tax then lets just start killing em one by one!
Sen. Cornyn, you have to be a man of no care for your elderly, handicapped, or military. Grow up you smug SOB.
Mr Cornyn, how many times did you vote for the debt ceiling when Bush was President? Mr. Cornyn, why were you not concerned for the debt ceiling when you voted for the Iraq War, Medicare Part D, and voting to reduce taxes when we could not pay our bills then? You guys are such hypocrites and liars!!
Stay in Texas and leave the rest of us alone. Social security does not contribute one dime to the deficit. Anyone who thinks otherwise is uninformed or watching Fox news.
In the immortal word of Gen. A. McAuliff, when the Germans ask for his surrender at Bastogne? “NUTS!”
Social Security has NOTHING to do with the federal budget! It is funded through payroll taxes, not income tax. The Repubs have wanted to cut it because they don’t believe in it. We know what they’re up to.
The government is supposed to represent the people, not take their country hostage! Republicans are like spoiled little children who will whine and just sit there and pout and do nothing until they get their screwed up demands. That is not a government for the people. They should be banished for dishonoring the most sacred contract of our nation.
