The corporate front group “Fix The Debt” still wants to cut Social Security benefits and lower the corporate tax rate. Former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell is working with the group, and he appeared on MSNBC today and made the remarkable claim that Obama needs to hike the Medicare age and cut Social Security benefits with a chained CPI, comparing it to President Lincoln leading on the 13th amendment and freeing the slaves:
RENDELL: Give the President credit, he said he would consider chained CPI, he said back in 2011 that he would raise the Medicare age, with carveouts. […] Those are things he’s going to have to deliver. […] He has to lead. And boy I’d love the whole Congress, this new Congress and the President, they should all go see a screening of Lincoln together, because Abraham Lincoln led on the 13th amendment when everybody on both sides told him he was crazy.
Watch it:
It is simply difficult to see the comparison between harming our seniors and freeing the slaves.
Click hereAi??to pledge to hold any Democrat who agrees to a deal that cuts Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid benefits accountable.
Ed Rendell is a rotten Democrat. It seems that the attack on Social Security and Medicare is a BI-PARTISAN attack. All the Republicans and many Democrats (like Rendell) want to destroy Social Security. Shame on these people.
Could someone please explain what is the point of supporting the Democrats when they have rotten politicians like Ed Rendell among them?
There may be a few progressives within the Democratic Party, but the agenda of the party itself is a pro-corporate agenda. They agree with the Republicans on destroying Social Security and Medicare. The only difference is that the Republicans want to destroy Social Security immediately, while the Democrats want to do it gradually.
The corporate agenda within the Democratic Party is not a justification for fleeing the party, it is a justification for taking over the Democratic Party. It is much easier for someone involved in the Democratic Party to work outside of the party than for someone who is not involved with the party to work within it, and if we wish to promote progressive ideas that will truly help this country, we must work both within the party and outside of it.
If we want to fix the financial problem why don’t we all take a pay cut. Here is what all means everybody
Rendell’s suggestions are despicable and pernicious.I know folks who can’t make ends meet w/ the SS they currently receive and one would be homeless if any changes in Her SS Disability were to happen.Millions of us have paid SS and M’care taxes out of our paychecks for decades and still are.We are eligible for our benefits at 65 and whenever a person decides to apply for SS.These programs are NOT “entitlements”! I thought they are stand alone programs that are self-funding and not adding to the debt nor tied to the debt in any way.My God Rendell,I use to like you…..how calloused, heartless and coldblooded can you be?Continuing to give rich, greedy, arrogant corporations tax breaks while breaking the backs of seniors and disabled folks is reprehensible, despicable and repugnant. You sound like a Repuglican, not a Dem.I think you should “self-deport” to the GOP! The Pentagon/DOD budget is bloated cut that and go back to Clinton tax rates for millionaires /billionaires.I have heard that very rich people can collect SS when they reach retirement age.Is this true?If it is ,these rich folks could be altruistic and forego them.
