The NRA has been claiming that it supports tougher background checks, a claim that the media has been uncritically reporting — even as the organization killed a series of background check bills in Virginia.
But on Twitter late last night, the NRA made clear that it does not support Obama’s universal background check proposal:
By taking this extreme position, the NRA disagrees with 92 percent of Americans, who said in a CBS/New York Times poll that they support universal background checks. Tellingly, in its much-touted poll of its members, the NRA did not ask them if they support this proposal.
92% of Americans do NOT support obamas gun grab plans. I never heard of the cbs poll. All the people I know who support the 2nd amendment have not heard of it and none of us voted in it. Just as with everything else you liberals support, you report the twisted and non factual.
Kelly, 92% of Americans support stronger background check requirements. As it stands now, I can sell a gun to whoever I want bc I am a private seller.
That’s exactly right! Would you sell it to a known criminal? I don’t know…maybe you would. But you also might sell it to your brother, but how do you do that background check? What if he was denied? How would THAT go over in your family?
For what it’s worth, fewer than 2% of all firearms sales in this country are sold without some kind of background check. Criminals don’t buy guns from reputable dealers…they steal them or trade them with other criminals. A universal background check rule, like most other anti-gun laws, only punishes law-abiding citizens. By definition, criminals don’t obey laws.
“92% of Americans support stronger background check requirements.”….
REALLY? Please prove that claim.
I agree with Kelly. How am I going to do a background check on the guy down the street if I want to sell him a shotgun my grandfather left me? Am I required to fill out paperwork? What do I do with it? How long do I keep it? Does this relieve me of liability if he shoots somebody? Now, what if I already have guns? Do I have to register them? What would that have done to prevent Aurora or Newtown?
Folks, the devil is in the details, and so far, nobody has presented any plans that address the things that any American would find objectionable.
Go to the FBI web site and look at their 2011 homicide statistics. More people were killed with knives, blunt instruments and bare hands than were killed with “assault weapons.” In Chicago last year, 972 people were killed in auto accidents, while just over 500 were killed with guns. Why is a “gun violence” death more tragic than any other kind? If politicians were really interested in preventing the death of “only one child,” shouldn’t they start in the areas where more deaths occur?
Because Jim that wouldn’t be “good” news as “good” news is anything you can get people into a scared, hate filled tizzy about, as in the “News” business ratings are king. Also it doesn’t hurt that fewer people are bitching about the economy if they are having a cow over a 3 in 100,000 chance of being killed by a gun in a mugging.
Bill of rights was to guarantee freedoms to individuals so that a majority could not take those feedoms away. We must take down the Blomberg nanny state.
Since when did CBS & the NY Times become trusted sources?
