Retired Kentuckian autoworker Kirk Gillenwaters of Louisville is counting on Social Security being there for him when he retires. He’s been working since age eighteen and will soon need the benefits he’s earned.
Kirk’s senator, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell (who calls himself the “proud guardian of gridlock”) wants to cut Social Security.
We’ve teamed up with Kirk to make a hard-hitting TV ad that shames McConnell for hurting the families he’s supposed to represent. Take 30 seconds to watch the add — and donate $3 to air it on Kentucky TV.
KIRK GILLENWATERS:
I started working at the Ford plant in Louisville when I was 18 years old.
After decades of hard work, I have some injuries.
We work hard for these companies, and weai??i??re promised a secure retirement in return.
Retirement is supposed to be promises made, promises kept.
But our pensions are being cut and we need Social Security.
When Senator Mitch McConnell supports cutting Social Security, heai??i??s breaking a promise ai??i?? and he’s hurting our families.
Senator McConnell: If anything, we need to expand Social Security benefits, not cut them.ON SCREEN:
Tell Mitch McConnell: Don’t Cut Social Security | ExpandSocialSecurity.com
In an interview recently granted to the National Review, McConnell expressed support for schemes that would cut benefits for future retirees. ai???I think a place to talk is on things like chained CPI,ai??? he told the Review, ai???and raising the age for Medicare… To me, thatai??i??s a better place to go in the fall than signaling that youai??i??re open to raising taxes.ai???
McConnell may not care about honoring the country’s promise of a secure and dignified retirement to younger workers, but his constituents do. By a three-to-one margin, Kentuckians surveyed by Public Policy Polling say that knowing Mitch McConnell supports cuts to Social Security or Medicare would make them less likely to vote for him:
If Republican Mitch McConnell supported any cuts to Social Security or Medicare benefits, including raising the retirement age or reducing cost-of-living adjustments, would you be more or less likely to support his candidacy for U.S. Senate, or would it not make a difference?
More likely……………………………………………… . 15%
Less likely ………………………………………………. 52%
Wouldn’t make a difference………………..……… 33%
(Asked of 585 Kentucky voters – MOE 4.1%)
By highlighting McConnellai??i??s out-of-touch stance on Social Security in this ad, we can send a signal that no Republican is safe from accountability — even the Republican Leader.
