There are now multiple press reports that President Obama will agree to a fiscal deal that enacts a so-called ai???Chained CPIai??? to calculate Social Security and veteransai??i?? benefits.Ai??Under this plan, ai???a person age 75 in the future will get a yearly benefit thatai??i??s $653 lower after ten years of chained CPI than that person would get under the current formula. An 85-year-old will have $1,139 less to live on.ai??? This represents a huge cut to benefits.
Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) told Congressional Quarterly (subscription only) that he doesn’t like the idea of the chained CPI “at all” and that his colleagues “overwhelmingly” agree with him:
Democrats sharply criticized the idea on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, but several said they hoped the White House could create a cushion to soften the impact on the neediest beneficiaries.
ai???I donai??i??t like it at all,ai??? said Sen.Ai??SherrodAi??Brown, D-Ohio, adding that his colleagues ai???overwhelminglyai??? agreed with him on the issue.
We set up an ActBlue page to highlight and reward bold progressive members of Congress who are speaking out publicly today.Ai??Check them out and donate $3 to them here.
The President is walking into a Republican trap. One in five people oppose cutting Social Security. If the cuts happen, the Democrars will pay dearly in the next election.
If Prez. Obama does this, this is further proof of his decet, lies, weakness, lack of strength and him and any democrat that supports such a messure should be votes out and we will support GOP during election time. At least we no we are getting F’ed & not tricked!! They also opporate from a position of strenth unlike Dem’s spineless position! I’m going to campaign to switch parties in my community so we know what we get then no how to prepare!!!!
Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit. It is totally funded by the payroll tax levied on employer and employee. If you reduce the outgo of SS, that money would not go into the general fund to reduce the deficit, it would go into the SS Trust Fund which the political idiots on Capitol Hill have already dipped their grimy little hands into. So SS has nothing to do with balancing the budget or reducing the deficit.
Obama is breaking his promise to NOT mess with Social Security ad Medicare. I am very disappointed in this man for even considering this. He is messing with many people’s lives by dipping into benefits that they worked for … LEGALLY worked for.
The 1% is richer now than anytime since the 1920’s, corporate profits are at an all time high, the unemployment rate would be 23% if they measured it now they way they did in 1993, and we have a ‘democratic” president proposing to cut social security and medicare. He is a Judas, betraying every person who voted for him, the most treacherous liar ever in the White House.
