Late last night, Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA) vetoed the “Domestic Worker Bill Of Rights,” which would’ve expanded sorely-needed protections to domestic workers in his state of California.
In rejecting it, Brown said that the bill “raises a number of unanswered questions,” and that he’d be unable to approve it.
The United Farm Workers (UFW)Ai??reacted harshlyAi??to Brown’s veto with the following statement:
The UFW is appalled at the governor’s decision to deny farm workers the basic legal tools to protect themselves from employers who intentionally put their lives at risk by refusing to provide them with adequate water and shade despite the dangerously high temperatures. By vetoing AB 2676, the governor continues the policy of giving animals more protections than those currently offered to farm workers.
Ironically, Brown also on the same night approved funding for a Ronald Reagan statue in the capitol building, saying that the former president and California governor had “courage and unique leadership ability.”Ai??Keep in mind that Reagan was actually the governor who ended free college tuition at all of the state’s universities, in a huge blow to progressivism.
Jerry Brown needs to take a good look at his values and decide whether he wants to walk in the shoes of Reagan or that of the Democrats.
I aplaude a Democrat who puts logic and thought into passing laws, and not just toes a party line. If you did not read the bill let me tell you that the bill was unclear on how it would be enforced, and if it would be extended to part time workers like baby sitters. The Governor prudently vetoed it and this is what he said was the reason. “In the face of consequences both unknown and unintended, I find it more prudent to do the studies before considering an untested legal regime for those that work in our homes,”
Wow, immagine that, he wants a law that is clear and concise, and refused to pass it with questions. I am thrilled that a democratic governor is using his head before iposing more laws and government on his consituents. As for your quote in there about the farm workers, I would point out that despite Obama’s best effort, we are still a free country, and if the workers are in fear for their lives at their current occupation, they have the right to quit and pursue happiness elsewhere. (That is written right into the original Bill of rights, I just looked it up)
As for the Ronald Reagan statue, First, this is one of several measures he passed before the deadline. Quit being petty, to be upset that he is the governor who ended free tuition is true, to be upset by it is ridiculous. I double checked to be sure, and I can safely tell you that the Bill of rights, as written by our fouders, says nothing about the right to free college tuition. To say this is a step back is silly, I researched it, at the time, the state was facing a huge deficit, and was spending more than it made. President Reagan saw the flaw in this and fixed it by making several cuts. these cuts led to a prosperous California for over a Decade.
